22nd July 2004
At 3am, I get jumped on by an inebriated Maccers, who apparently left Ranger drinking at the campsite. At 8am, I get woken by Rusty the Ridgeback licking my arm, laugh at the excited dogs as they play at the end of my bed and decide to get up. I jump on the internet to email off the Uganda update while Maccers sleeps and on return, find Ranger has returned and passed out on the sofa looking pretty jiggered; I write my diary and prepare the car for the off. The road to Busia is good tarmac and the immigration and customs back into Kenya is equally as easy. We reach Kisumo on the edge of Lake Victoria at 3ish and find the Kisumo Beach Resort, recommended by John as a good stop-off. We eat a late lunch of yes, hotdogs again; Ranger sleeps off his hangover in the tent; I read next to the water and sip a cup of Yorkshire tea (!) and watch a Hammerkof swallow a fish. The place is pretty dead. I start to feel bored and restless so go and wake Ranger for a beer next to the water and chat while the sheet lighting flashes over the lake. The wind picks up so we retire to the car and cook the chilli con carne packet delicacy saved for his birthday in August – worth not waiting!
